Benson claims first Sign-Up win since 2020

Paul Benson's Sign Up competition on Monday began badly - he reached the club to discover both his playing partners had pulled out - but ended in style as he claimed his first win in the event since August 2020*.

Paul scored 34 points to see off Paul Corris, his new playing partner, and Alex Dalgleish, both on 32.

"I played pretty well but you always need things to go your way," said Paul. "Take the third. I reached the back of the green in three and then holed a monster 60ft putt.

"But my best shot of the day was probably my drive on 11 - that was very nice.

"I feel I should have a lower handicap than my 27.5 - it's gone up a few shots since WHS came in - but I suppose the numbers don't lie."

The wet conditions and early morning rainled to a reduced field of 15.

First time winner

Among them was new Senior Section member Mike Thoburn, who marked his Sign-Up debut in September by winning first time out with 37 points (Mike, incidentally, was the 16th and Paul the 17th winner of an individual Sign Up competition this year).

Mike, a driving instructor hailing from Hexham in Northumberland, only took the game up seriously at the start of the year and must have been wondering what all the fuss was about.

On Monday, though, the game came back to bite him as he finished with 20 points.

"Someone suggested I was a bandit when I won last month," Mike said. "I wasn't today, I can assure you. I seemed to top everything - and there were even two air-shots!"

*For the record, Paul did win the Seniors event at Chartham Park earlier this year, with an impressive 41 points.
