Seniors Sign Up - Monday Sept 9
Newcomer Nigel Wilson extended his 100 percent success rate in Seniors' events on Monday, celebrating his birthday with a debut Sign-Up victory.
Nigel, in a "hit or miss" display, finished with 32 points to beat Mike Shaw, Derek Taylor and Brian Watt by a single point, with Brian missing out on a top-three spot on countback.
Nigel, whose first appearance in a Seniors knockout event culminated a few weeks ago with him winning the Bill Plaice Cup, put Monday's low scoring down to a change in conditions.
"There was some wind, but we've also been chasing the ball up onto hard greens recently and suddenly we're having to fly it the whole way because of the softer conditions," he said. "I left a lot of my approaches short because of that.
"I was a bit hit-and-miss today. I lost my drive right on the 5th, for instance, and lost another ball on 15 when my tee shot flew left.
"But I also hit some nice long drives"¦ and then I got up and down from a soggy bunker on 17 for a good par, and that probably clinched it."
Nigel's first appearance in a Sign Up almost did not happen at all. He missed the competition deadline but organiser Paul Corris's leniency, and George Niblett's willingness to play alongside him in the final pair, meant he could take part.
Choosing who to trust"¦
Mike's runner-up spot also owed something to Paul's generosity, as well as providing all Seniors with a good lesson: Take full responsibility for your own scorecard"¦ and, if you need to entrust it to someone else, make sure it's not someone as forgetful as Tony Lawrence.
Mike - promoted to second place in the previous Sign Up when Tony was disqualified for failing to sign his card - was happily ensconced and enjoying his drink in the bar after Monday's exertions and recklessly asked Tony to hand in his scorecard for him.
Instead, Tony drove home with it in his back pocket and Mike's runner-up spot was only secured when Paul contacted Tony and politely suggested he return to the club with the missing paperwork.
